Questions You Might Have About Aquatic Feed Production
Find professional answers to common questions, covering the key processes and important considerations in aquatic feed production.

1. If the formula contains unconventional raw materials (e.g., insect meal, algae powder, fermented soybean meal), does the feed production line need adjustment?
Yes. Different ingredients have very different physical properties For instance, some are high in oil, some have coarse fiber, and others tend to clump. These factors directly affect production efficiency and final product quality.
2. Can the same production line produce both floating and sinking feed? What needs attention during the switch?
Yes, but the main process path must be defined. If the production line is centered on an extruder, it can produce both floating and sinking feed.
The difference lies in the setting of the extrusion chamber pressure, die open area, and drying parameters. If the production line is centered on a pellet mill, it can only produce sinking hard pellets, not floating feed.
Attention points during the switch:.
- Replace the extruder die (floating feed requires a lower open area, while sinking feed requires a higher open area).
- Adjust the extrusion chamber pressure and temperature parameters.
- Confirm whether the dryer temperature curve needs to be changed.
- Clean residual materials from the previous batch to avoid cross-contamination.
3. If I plan to upgrade from a hard pellet line to an extrusion line in the future, what existing equipment can be retained and what needs to be replaced?
Upgrading from a traditional pellet line to an extrusion line is an improvement in the process path, but it does not mean all equipment needs to be replaced. Most front-end and back-end equipment can continue to be used, with the core change concentrated in the forming stage.
The main equipment that can be retained includes: raw material receiving, grinding, and mixing systems; conveying, metering, and storage units; and drying, cooling, and packaging systems (which can be optimized depending on the configuration).
Key equipment that needs to be added or replaced includes: the extruder (replacing the traditional pellet mill), the steam conditioning system (if the original system cannot meet requirements), and certain post-processing equipment (such as an enhanced coating system).
Through modular upgrades, you can control investment costs while achieving an upgrade in product structure and market competitiveness.
4. How should the screw configuration of the extruder be adjusted according to the formula?
The screw configuration directly determines the conveying, shearing, and cooking process of the material inside the extrusion chamber. It is the key factor in achieving different product structures and performance.
Since different formulas have different requirements for mechanical and thermal energy input, a targeted combination design is required.
- For high-starch formulas: enhance the shear and compression section configuration to improve expansion.
- For high-protein or high-fat formulas: reduce shear intensity to avoid excessive degradation or oil separation.
- For high-fiber formulas: optimize the conveying structure to reduce blockage and improve throughput.
- For multi-category production needs: adopt a replaceable modular screw combination to enhance flexibility.
By adjusting the combination of screw elements, different product performance goals can be achieved on the same equipment, balancing production stability and energy efficiency.
